n addition to his Doctorate in Physical Therapy, Sam has a master’s degree in Exercise Physiology, and a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training, which gives him a unique perspective with regard to healing and recovery. To Sam, the patient is the priority, and his goal is to restore each person back to doing the things that they love as quickly as is possible. His approach is function based, with each therapy program being specifically designed and tailored to address the needs and goals of the individual patient.

Sam recently moved from Hampton Roads with his family to the Waynesboro area due to a love for the mountains and the outdoors, and a desire to become a part of a community that embraces the same.

DPT - Sports injuries DPT - General Orthopedics, Sports biomechanics, Running/biking injuries, Running analysis
DPT

Specialization:Endurance sports injuries (i.e. running, cycling, triathlons), general orthopedic rehabilitation, manual therapy approach, biomechanical assessment and custom orthotics

Steve became interested in physical therapy by having "on-the-job" training. In high school, he broke his femur while playing football. He was personally introduced to the field the hard way. This experience opened his eyes to physical therapy and sparked his interest in pursuing the field. Experiencing physical therapy as a patient gave Steve an inside understanding of the pain of a sports injury and the nature of rehabilitation.

Steve earned his doctorate degree in physical therapy from the University of Pittsburgh. He has practiced in a variety of settings including inpatient, home health, skilled nursing, and outpatient. By far, his favorite setting is outpatient orthopedics with endurance athletes. He has a passion for performance training including medically based bike fits, running analyses, prescribing and fitting custom orthotics, and injury prevention.

When Steve is not practicing physical therapy, he is out cycling and hiking the beautiful surroundings of Albemarle county and being with his family. Steve loves spending plenty of time with his wife, Jody, and his son, Elijah.

Shannon is an Augusta County local and developed an interest in physical therapy at a young age. Shannon received her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Shenandoah University and graduated with her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Mary Baldwin University's Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences in 2021. I wanted to share a positive experience with you in hope that Sam receives the recognition that he very much deserves. My ten year old daughter has been working with Sam for a few months for physical therapy in the Waynesboro location. We have been very impressed with Sam and are so thankful for his care and attention toward my daughter. Every week he seems to have a new activity for her that is age appropriate and keeps her engaged. He is creative and knowledgeable and always seeks feedback from us and provides updates on her progress. As someone who works in a therapy setting, it is so refreshing to see his approach toward her and her individual therapy needs and we are so grateful for this.

Completed a running assessment on 3/19/21 with Steve and could not have asked for a better experience. I was greeted upon arrival and the process was explained. I exited with a plan emailed to me so that I could continue making progress with my running gait at home. Very professional and knowledgeable interactions from each person in the PT at acac Waynesboro office.

Sam Snelgrove gave me helpful and knowledgeable Physical Therapy throughout my rotator cuff treatment both before and after surgery. Sam patiently evaluated and re-evaluated my ability, and explained each exercise answering my "why" questions in detail. As a result I was motivated to push myself to regain my shoulder range of motion and strength even though I am over 70! Thanks Sam!

I am 79 years old and in good health. I recently had Total Knee Replacement surgery on my right knee. After a brief series of Physical Therapy (PT) sessions in-home, I started the surgeon’s prescribed PT with a local practice. Having no prior experience with PT, this was a total random choice and it was there that I met Sam. I was immediately impressed with his personal interest in my needs and how knowledgeable he was of this surgery. He designed a regimen of stretches and exercises to help me regain the flexibility lost in surgery. After 4 weeks of PT 3 days per week, I have about 90% of the flexibility back and he has reduced the sessions to 2 days per week. During each of my visits, I watched him work with other patients with different needs just as efficiently. I also saw how the other PT’s in the practice continually sought his advice and help. If you are in need of PT, I would highly recommend Sam. He is a Pro with the expertise to help you. George Dasher, Culpeper, VA

I had the pleasure of having PT after a vertebrae break with Sam Snelgrove. Sam was fantastic in every way. He was kind and patient and helped me to understand the exercises and ensure I was doing them in a manner that would best strengthen the areas that I needed to in order to increase my mobility and strength. He also helped me to customize a home routine with things I had in the house so I could safely do exercises when I didn’t have appts. He showed interest in my personally. My mobility improved much faster than I expected and I felt blessed to have found Sam.

Fabulous in every way. Shannon is awesome. Extremely knowledgeable, patient, explains everything in detail. She is extremely observant looking for even slight deviations of joint angles or weight adjustments or when I tried to cheat on balancing exercises by putting one leg against the other. She was careful to not overdo exercises or push too much or too fast, but encouraging and helpful where she saw I could push myself a bit more without getting hurt. The home exercises were very helpful and loved that I could either bring them up on my phone or computer and see video examples of proper technique or I could just print them. In addition to all her technical physio knowledge, she is a fun and friendly person and in an odd way I'm sorry the pain is completely gone now as I have "graduated". The location is easy to get to, very clean, and easy to arrange appointments. It was never crowded, (except that I may have now screwed that part up with a good review) so I always had 100% of Shannon's attention. Shannon - thank you so much... I look forward to getting hurt again in the future (but not too soon).

Great people to work with, who are very professional and genuinely interested in you, and supporting you to bring you back to your strongest physical condition/health possible. Shannon is an amazing physical therapist and I would highly recommend requesting her. I have been to therapists in the past and have never been so impressed with one, like I was with her. She goes the extra mile. Also, Erin, who runs the whole operation there is a "can-do" person. She works hard and has a very pleasant and friendly personality.

Aging gets us all in different ways. I started experiencing severe discomfort in my lower back and sciatica pain in my left leg. I tried stretches and hot packs--looked for resources on YouTube. Finally, I made my first appointment at PT at acac Waynesboro. My first appointment was in January. Sam Snelgrove completed a comprehensive exam to determine any issues related to balance and flexibility. We started a course of exercises that resolved my pain within 4 weeks. The staff is professional and provides consistent and focused attention on one client at a time. Turned to Sam again as I started to experience vertigo. PT at acac team members taught me very important maneuvers to help me manage the symptoms. I strongly recommend Sam and the team.

Why is physical therapy important?

Physical therapy is an important element to help you recover from pain, whether from a sudden injury, or a chronic problem.

Strengthening – Unbalanced or weak muscles can lead to pain, put undue stress on joints, and increase the risk of injury. Physical therapy can strengthen surrounding musculature, which can help to reduce the strain on your joints.

Movement Patterns – Most of us have faulty movement patterns created by our lifestyles over the years. Everything from our footwear to our office chairs can set up patterns of movement that are unbalanced or otherwise problematic. If you have chronic pain or have suffered an injury, physical therapy helps address the underlying movement patterns. Physical therapy provides pain relief and makes corrections to reduce the risk of reinjury and ongoing problems.

Prevent scar-tissue build-up – After you have been injured or had surgery, scar tissue forms naturally as part of the healing process. But if the scar tissue builds up too much it frequently causes pain and excessive tightness. Physical therapists use several techniques to prevent scar tissue build-up to ensure any scar tissue supports your healing and doesn’t impede your rehabilitation and recovery.

Improve surgical outcomes - Physical therapy addresses pain, strength, scar tissue, range of motion, and more issues associated with surgery. Many patients find physical therapy both before and after surgery helps shorten recovery times.

Flexibility and range of motion – Developing and  maintaining flexibility and range of motion makes everyday activities easier, less painful, and more fun. Your physical therapist designs appropriate stretching exercises and therapies to help you move about more freely.

For pain relief, greater strength, balance, mobility, and flexibility physical therapy is an important component of a healthy lifestyle and to help recover from chronic pain or any injury.

What makes Physical Therapy@acac different?

At Physical Therapy@acac, our focus is on your healing journey. We start by listening carefully and making a thorough assessment of your condition(s) before making a recovery plan. You are the center of the process, so we discuss your goals to make sure that every step of the way you are comfortable with the approach and support you receive.

Physical therapy treatments often work to reduce pain immediately, but healing takes time. As you progress, your physical therapist will reassess your condition(s) and modify your treatment plan as you go along.

At Physical Therapy@acac, we are with you every step of the way!

Take Back Your Life!

The first step to recovery and taking back your life with physical therapy is to meet with a physical therapist. This initial meeting is exceptionally enlightening for many patients. You will discuss your condition(s) and how it limits your lifestyle. Your physical therapist will provide insights into why your body reacts as it does, and help you understand more about what healing will occur as you continue on your recovery plan.

Most patients leave that initial physical therapy session feeling hopeful (and many have less pain already!) Don’t suffer for one more minute!
