Judy Zacharias says she went into physical therapy as a career choice on the basis of a career aptitude and interest test, but the real question is why she stayed in it for 37 years.
There are three answers to that:
“First, being a physical therapist allows you to be a detective when assessing patients and their physical problems. Second, you get to use the skills you’ve learned to help heal patients’ physical maladies. And third, you get to learn a lot from your patients and to go home tired after a day of work with the satisfaction that you made a real difference in the life or one or more people that day.”
Judy earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Ohio State University and her Master of Science in Orthopedic Physical Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia.
She now has more than 37 years of experience working as a physical therapist in a wide variety of settings. She specializes in treatment of back, hip and shoulder pain, general orthopedics, and women’s health issues including osteoporosis, structural pain during pregnancy, incontinence and coccydynia. "When I first tried the BASE Clinic program, I quickly saw it was something very special. I’m not a "gym person," I’m mostly an endurance athlete. I do a lot of running, and bodyweight exercises. After trying the BASE Clinic workout I thought: “I could do this three days a week and really enjoy it.”
This thought followed: “Wow, this will get someone like me into the gym, doing this three days a week: lifting, getting stronger, and enjoying it." BASE Clinic’s special equipment is unique, but it’s also really simple to use. It’s not intimidating. I’ve been here at BASE Clinic for one year, and honestly: I’ve never had such a strong core in my life. I’ve noticed the positive difference when I run, and just in everyday living."

MPT - Clinic Manager, General orthopedics, Joint replacements, Pediatrics, Neurological rehab, Treatment of swimmers, Post-surgical rehab, Vestibular
MPT
Specialization: Treatment of Pediatrics/Pediatric sports medicine, vestibular and neurologic rehabilitation and general orthopedics
Jennifer Fontaine’s career choice to be a physical therapist stems back to her volunteering experience at the University of Virginia’s spinal cord unit.
She had been alternating between PT and medical doctor and her observances at the unit proved the deciding factor.
“I worked with several young spinal cord patients and saw the difference in their interactions with their docs versus their PTs. The docs had to tell them the list of all the things that they would not be able to do again. The PTs were able to give them all the alternatives of what they would still be able to do for themselves. I liked being on the positive side of that equation.”
Fuelled with her mission, Jennifer received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1996 from the University of Virginia. She then received her Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999.
She is experienced in pediatric rehabilitation including brain/spinal cord injuries as well as developmental therapy. She now specializes in treatment of pediatrics/ pediatric sports medicine, vestibular and neurologic rehabilitation and general orthopedics.
In addition, she has spent time at Kluge Children’s Rehab Center (UVA).
When she is not working, Jennifer enjoys reading, being outdoors, hiking and playing with her children.

Bobby is a Certified Hand Therapist and passionate about the intricacies of the hand and its impact on function. He was first exposed to the importance of protecting one’s hands when employed as a meat cutter, quickly realizing how life can be thrown upside down after a hand injury. Later, during his time as a volunteer at the VA Medical Center Hand Clinic, he became enamored by the juxtaposition of art and science in Occupational Therapy. He went on to earn his Master of Occupational Therapy from the University of Florida. He has experience in a variety of settings including inpatient neuro-rehabilitation, skilled nursing, and acute care, before having the opportunity to specialize in the treatment of the hand.
Bobby prides himself in individualized post-surgical rehabilitation while working closely with Hand Surgeons. As an Occupational Therapist, he believes in a holistic approach to therapy, as it’s never “just” a hand injury. It is important to him to recognize the interconnection of the brain and hand, and how this relates to pain and function. A natural problem solver, he collaborates with patents to tackle functional challenges from multiple angles. He is especially passionate about custom orthosis design.
In his free time, he enjoys gardening, woodworking, fermentation, and the never-ending pursuit of home improvement. Be sure to ask him about the time he had a pet raccoon.

She has professional experience across the continuum of health care from emergent to acute care and from nursing care to general and neurological outpatient services. She understands the stress that surgery, injury, or illness can have on a person's life and is dedicated to providing skilled occupational therapy services in a collaborative environment.
Melanie is a certified, licensed occupational therapist. Her passion for becoming an OT started with her brother, who has Down Syndrome and Autism. She grew up attending his therapy appointments with him and saw how impactful therapy was on his life. From there she knew that working with people with disabilities, of all sorts, was her goal to be someone that positively impacts this population. Through her experiences in school, she found that working with people with neurological conditions is where she feels she can do the most good. At PT@acac she's also excited to be working with hands/orthopedic patients to restore functioning back in their lives.
Melanie is primarily from Colorado, but before settling there had moved around from New Mexico, Florida, and Texas as her dad is a retired Air Force pilot. She attended Colorado State University for her bachelors in Psychology. She traded the tall, snowy Rockies for the lush, historic Blue Ridge mountains and received her Doctorate of Occupational Therapy from Mary Baldwin University-Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences. Susan Heald has developed a comprehensive biomechanical approach to assessing and treating each of her patients. She addresses her patients’ movement system problems with an integrative perspective rather than treating isolated joints or body regions. She particularly enjoys designing personalized and creative home exercises accompanied by detailed explanations to optimize her patients’ understanding and participation in PT to assure their best outcomes. Her focus on activity-specific, corrective exercise provides her patients with the tools they need to return to their regular activities.
Susan has been working as a Physical Therapist for the past 33 years in primarily outpatient physical therapy settings including an outpatient private practice in Delaware, UVA Medical Center, Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, and currently is with PT@ACAC.
She has been a lifelong learner since she earned her B.S. in Physical Therapy from the University of Delaware in 1988, then her post-professional Advanced M.S. in Orthopedic Physical Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 1995 and finally her clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy from VCU in 2008. She continues to advance and update her clinical practice skills by attending PT continuing education courses, attending workplace in-services, and reading professional journal articles.
Her Master’s degree thesis research paper studied a functional outcome measure designed for shoulder patients and was published in the Physical Therapy Journal in 1997 (The shoulder pain and disability index: the construct validity and responsiveness of a region-specific disability measure; SL Heald, DL Riddle, RL Lamb). She received the APTA Dorothy Briggs Memorial Scientific Award in 1998 for her research and publication.
For 20 years, Susan was a guest lecturer in the VCU DPT program. She has led a community workshop on running gait training and running-related exercises, has presented her research work regionally and nationally, and led many journal clubs and clinical update in-services with her colleagues. She has coached running and conditioning workouts for the WAHS Crew team and was a youth soccer coach.
In her downtime, Susan enjoys spending time with her husband, their 2 adult daughters and wildly-energetic, Muppet-like goldendoodle, Mollie. She is most content when she is active and outdoors and loves running the roads of Albemarle County with friends, playing tennis and gardening. She also loves to go hiking, paddleboarding, biking, and skiing in Virginia or when visiting more distant beautiful places with mountains and water.
With over a decade of experience working with the human body, Lori is excited to apply her knowledge to physical therapy. In 2010 she obtained a degree in Exercise Science from Santa Fe College and has worked at ACAC since 2013 leading personal training sessions and group exercise classes. This led her to obtain her Physical Therapist Assistant degree from South University in 2021.
When Lori isn't working, you can find her outdoors, hiking with her husband, practicing yoga, baking, or somewhere in the mountains.

For undergrad, Tyra attended Florida State University, where she obtained her bachelor's degree in Athletic Training. She then pursued her master's degree in Athletic Training from the University of Virginia. Tyra says: "I always dreamed of becoming an athletic trainer. When I was six years old, I was becoming a huge fan of football, watching NFL games with my stepfather every week (Go Steelers!). Watching the athletic trainers work hard to help those that got injured on the field inspired me to do the same. Playing several sports at the time, there were not many athletic trainers around in my town and I wanted to learn more. Therefore, I enrolled in the athletic training course in high school, and the passion has continued to grow since. I love helping others feel better and reach their goals and I couldn't imagine doing anything else."
