Amber Myers

Amber Myers
MPT - General orthopedics, Balance disorders, Geriatrics, Spine, Vestibular rehab, Vertigo/BPPV

Specialization: General orthopedic rehabilitation after injury or surgery with a special interest in vestibular rehabilitation and balance disorders

Myers was always interested in science and how it impacted people’s lives for the better, but it wasn’t until completing her freshman year at college that she decided to forego her plan to be a high school science teacher and turn to the field of Physical Therapy instead.

“I sat down with my dad, the health professions advisor at the college in my hometown, and we talked through many different careers in the field of science. He mentioned physical therapy and I expressed sufficient interest that he arranged for me to meet the PT in our local school system.

“I realized right away that PT was a profession that would blend my interest in helping others with my interest in science. After observing in an outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic in my junior year, I was hooked!”

Amber now holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and a Master of Physical Therapy degree from The University of Iowa.

She has experience in working in hospital settings, skilled nursing facilities, and outpatient orthopedics.

She enjoys working with patients of all ages in general orthopedic rehabilitation and has a special interest in vestibular dysfunction, BPPV, and balance disorders.

When she is not working she enjoys spending time with her husband and three children. The family likes to go for hikes and walks with their dog, visit historic sites, and watch movies together. They spend time at their Minnesota Lake cabin as well and are involved in their local church.

Amber also enjoys getting to know people from other countries and cultures, helps out at her children's schools and likes to work out regularly at ACAC so she can practice some of the exercises she makes her patients do!

Judy Zacharias

Judy Zacharias
MSPT - Women’s health, General orthopedics, Geriatrics, Balance disorders, Spine, Hip
MSPT

Specialization: Treatment of back hip and shoulder pain. General orthopedics and women's health issues including osteoporosis, structural pain during pregnancy, incontinence and coccydynia

Judy Zacharias says she went into physical therapy as a career choice on the basis of a career aptitude and interest test, but the real question is why she stayed in it for 37 years.

There are three answers to that:

“First, being a physical therapist allows you to be a detective when assessing patients and their physical problems. Second, you get to use the skills you’ve learned to help heal patients’ physical maladies. And third, you get to learn a lot from your patients and to go home tired after a day of work with the satisfaction that you made a real difference in the life or one or more people that day.”

Judy earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Ohio State University and her Master of Science in Orthopedic Physical Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia.

She now has more than 37 years of experience working as a physical therapist in a wide variety of settings. She specializes in treatment of back, hip and shoulder pain, general orthopedics, and women’s health issues including osteoporosis, structural pain during pregnancy, incontinence and coccydynia. She also has extensive geriatrics experience.

When she is not working, Judy likes to spend time with family and friends. She also enjoys being involved in the life of her church (St. Thomas Aquinas) and in an ecumenical group IMPACT that works for systemic change in the community. If she has any free time after that, she loves to watch soccer.

Heather Guryansky

Heather Guryansky
PTA - General orthopedics, sports injuries, post-surgical rehab

Specialization: general orthopaedic rehab with special interst in core stabilization, balance disorders, sport specific injuries

I was born and raised in Fairfax VA. I graduated from James Madison University in 2015 where I majored in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy track. I graduated from Northern Virginia Community College in 2018 with my Physical Therapist Assistant degree, where I was fortunate to have a variety of clinical placements in the acute, subacute and outpatient settings.

(Other work experience: I used to be a certified personal trainer prior to PTA school. I came to work at ACAC after 2 years working in a skilled nursing facility rehab center where I worked with the geriatric population in overcoming functional mobility limitations.)

I am a former competitive gymnast and had my fair share of injuries that required PT. I have a lot of respect for what our bodies are capable of and want to help others maintain optimal functioning through education of injury prevention and effective body mechanics. I pursued a career in physical therapy because I want to help people achieve their best level of health and fitness so that they can enjoy their passions/interests pain free.

Since moving to the Charlottesville area in 2019 I have enjoyed checking out new hiking trails, local restaurants, fostering dogs from the CASPCA, socializing at breweries and wineries and going to the IX Park Farmers Markets!

"When I first tried the BASE Clinic program, I quickly saw it was something very special. I’m not a "gym person," I’m mostly an endurance athlete. I do a lot of running, and bodyweight exercises. After trying the BASE Clinic workout I thought: “I could do this three days a week and really enjoy it.”
This thought followed: “Wow, this will get someone like me into the gym, doing this three days a week: lifting, getting stronger, and enjoying it." BASE Clinic’s special equipment is unique, but it’s also really simple to use. It’s not intimidating. I’ve been here at BASE Clinic for one year, and honestly: I’ve never had such a strong core in my life. I’ve noticed the positive difference when I run, and just in everyday living."

Jennifer Fontaine
MPT - Clinic Manager, General orthopedics, Joint replacements, Pediatrics, Neurological rehab, Treatment of swimmers, Post-surgical rehab, Vestibular
MPT

Specialization: Treatment of Pediatrics/Pediatric sports medicine, vestibular and neurologic rehabilitation and general orthopedics

Jennifer Fontaine’s career choice to be a physical therapist stems back to her volunteering experience at the University of Virginia’s spinal cord unit.

She had been alternating between PT and medical doctor and her observances at the unit proved the deciding factor.

“I worked with several young spinal cord patients and saw the difference in their interactions with their docs versus their PTs. The docs had to tell them the list of all the things that they would not be able to do again. The PTs were able to give them all the alternatives of what they would still be able to do for themselves. I liked being on the positive side of that equation.”

Fuelled with her mission, Jennifer received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in 1996 from the University of Virginia. She then received her Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999.

She is experienced in pediatric rehabilitation including brain/spinal cord injuries as well as developmental therapy. She now specializes in treatment of pediatrics/ pediatric sports medicine, vestibular and neurologic rehabilitation and general orthopedics.

In addition, she has spent time at Kluge Children’s Rehab Center (UVA).

When she is not working, Jennifer enjoys reading, being outdoors, hiking and playing with her children.

Susan Heald has developed a comprehensive biomechanical approach to assessing and treating each of her patients. She addresses her patients’ movement system problems with an integrative perspective rather than treating isolated joints or body regions. She has been a lifelong learner since she earned her B.S. in Physical Therapy from the University of Delaware in 1988, then her post-professional Advanced M.S. in Orthopedic Physical Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 1995 and finally her clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy from VCU in 2008. She continues to advance and update her clinical practice skills by attending PT continuing education courses, attending workplace in-services, and reading professional journal articles.

Her Master’s degree thesis research paper studied a functional outcome measure designed for shoulder patients and was published in the Physical Therapy Journal in 1997 (The shoulder pain and disability index: the construct validity and responsiveness of a region-specific disability measure; SL Heald, DL Riddle, RL Lamb). She received the APTA Dorothy Briggs Memorial Scientific Award in 1998 for her research and publication.

She has coached running and conditioning workouts for the WAHS Crew team and was a youth soccer coach.

In her downtime, Susan enjoys spending time with her husband, their 2 adult daughters and wildly-energetic, Muppet-like goldendoodle, Mollie. She is most content when she is active and outdoors and loves running the roads of Albemarle County with friends, playing tennis and gardening.
